'Fortune Teller'

Martin Riebeek baseerde zijn kunstwerk op de mechanische waarzegster die vroeger op de kermis stond opgesteld: bij inworp van een munt kreeg je de toekomst op een briefje. In de entreehal van het verpleeghuis plaatste hij een vitrine met daarin een beeld van een waarzegster. Bezoekers die de vrouw bekijken worden ongemerkt gefilmd. De opname wordt daarna samen met een tekst op een scherm geprojecteerd. De teksten worden door een computer 'willekeurig' onder het beeld gezet, die daarvoor put uit een voorraad van duizend regels.

In the entrance hall of the nursing home, he placed a display case containing a statue of a fortune teller. Visitors observing the woman are unwittingly filmed. The recording is subsequently projected onto a screen together with a caption such as e.g. ‘Thresholds are safe but, unfortunately, one cannot stand on them forever’. These captions are added to the image by a computer that randomly selects them from a stock of one thousand.

Riebeek doorzocht duizenden romans en koos telkens de eerste regel van de honderdste bladzijde. Vervolgens selecteerde hij de regels op hun voorspellende kwaliteiten. Een extra gegeven bij dit werk is dat familie en vrienden van de bewoners van het zorgcentrum door het filmpje nog wat langer aanwezig blijven.

Riebeek browsed through thousands of novels and consistently chose the first line on the hundredth page. He subsequently selected the lines according to their prophetic qualities. An added quality of the work is that the family and friends of the nursing home’s residents will, thanks to the short film, stay on the premises a bit longer.
