The road movie Lotus Journey is shown on two LED screens mounted above two train tunnels. The train tunnels are the lifelines to the outside world. The movie is about Skyler, a young girl from the Broekpolder residential development, who goes on a trip to visit her cousin Caleb in San Francisco. Along the way, she meets all kinds of people in a variety of situations.
We filmed our way through Beverwijk, Heemskerk and California, recording hundreds of greetings. Lotus Journey has a running time of 23 hours, so passers-by will always see a different film fragment. You only see a few seconds of the film at a time, so everyone can make up their own story. Passers-by set the tone of the film, too, with their car radios and MP3 players. The film gives the viewer watching from the personal space of their bike or car a private view of the big wide world up ahead.
